When to Schedule, Where to Go and What Time Works Best

Engagement sessions can be scheduled at any point before your wedding, but we recommend booking yours at least two to four months in advance. If you plan to use the photographs for save-the-dates, invitations or your wedding website, scheduling earlier will give you plenty of time to receive and enjoy your gallery.

When choosing a location, think about places that feel natural and meaningful to you as a couple. This could be where you had your first date, a favourite park, a quiet beach, a downtown setting or even your own home. We’re always happy to recommend locations based on the season, your personal style and the overall look you envision.

For the most flattering and romantic light, engagement sessions are typically scheduled during the final one to two hours before sunset. The exact start time will vary throughout the year and may be adjusted depending on the location, weather and amount of shade. We’ll help choose the best time so your photographs have that soft, warm and natural glow.

What to wear

Choose clothing that feels like you, fits comfortably and allows you to move naturally. Neutral and earthy colours photograph beautifully, while subtle patterns and textures can add interest without becoming distracting. Avoid large logos, neon colours and very busy prints.

Most importantly, select pieces that make you feel confident. Your session will include walking, sitting, cuddling and plenty of movement, so you should be able to move comfortably in whatever you choose.

Recommended tones

  • Cream + camel

  • White + denim + tan

  • Olive + beige

  • Rust + cream

  • Dusty blue + navy

  • Burgundy + charcoal

dressed up

Fitted

Fitted silhouettes photograph beautifully and help create a polished, romantic look. Consider a fitted midi or maxi dress, a flowing skirt with a simple top, or tailored pants paired with a bodysuit or blouse. Soft fabrics, subtle textures and layers can add movement and dimension to your photographs.

For something timeless and comfortable, try well-fitting jeans with a white button-up, neutral sweater or simple fitted top. Complete the look with clean sneakers, boots or another comfortable shoe. Casual outfits work especially well when they feel intentional, coordinated and true to your everyday style.

Relaxed and Casual

Partner Styling

Coordinate with one another without matching exactly. Start with one person’s outfit, then choose complementary colours, textures and levels of formality for the other. If one partner is wearing a patterned piece, the other will usually photograph best in a solid colour pulled from that pattern.

Make sure both outfits feel equally polished. For example, a dress pairs beautifully with dress pants and a button-up, while jeans and a simple top work well with chinos, dark denim or a relaxed button-up. Empty pockets before the session and leave phones, keys and bulky wallets in the car whenever possible.

What to bring

You’re welcome to bring a second outfit (most sessions include an outfit change) if you would like both a dressed-up and casual look. We also recommend bringing comfortable walking shoes, especially if your chosen location involves trails, fields or uneven ground you can change into your preferred shoes once we reach each spot.

Consider bringing:

  • Water

  • A small touch-up kit

  • A hairbrush or comb

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • A jacket or blanket for cooler weather

  • Any meaningful item you would love to incorporate

  • Treats, water and a leash if your pet is joining us

Try to keep additional belongings to a minimum so we can move easily between locations.

Preparation Tips for a

Comfortable Session

A few small things can make your

session feel even more comfortable

and relaxed

Drink plenty of water the day before and bring some with you to your session.

Wear comfortable shoes to walk in, especially if we’re meeting outdoors. Heels can always be brought along if you'd like them for a few photos.

Plan outfits that allow you to move easily and feel like yourself.

Bring one to three meaningful baby items to include so your session is more personal to you.

Preparation Tips for a Comfortable Session

A few small things can make your session feel even more comfortable and relaxed

Give yourself plenty of time to get ready so you don’t arrive feeling rushed. Steam or iron your clothing beforehand, remove tags and make sure everything fits comfortably while sitting, walking and moving.

Eat something before your session, stay hydrated and break in any new shoes ahead of time. Check the weather before leaving and bring an extra layer if the temperature may drop as the sun sets.

Plan to arrive about 10 minutes early so you have time to park, gather your things and settle in. You don’t need to practise poses or worry about knowing what to do—we’ll guide you through the entire session with natural prompts and plenty of movement. Your only job is to relax, enjoy the time together and focus on one another.

If you’re deciding between outfit options or would like help coordinating with your partner, feel free to
